Threshold Guardians
Painting on paper has a satisfying feeling. There is an immediacy in the process that invites imagination and play. Placing the tape on the border and setting up a boundary for the images to appear feels like casting a circle and calling in the corners to support. It is preparing a space for the energy to become seen. As soon as I choose a color, the story and the characters begin to make themselves known. These pieces are magical in their process of creation, a sense that comes through in the final image.

One of my favorite childhood movies was The Neverending Story and I have vivid memories of watching Atreyu trying to get to the Southern Oracle. He had to pass through different gates, each with their own tests and guardians. The concept of threshold guardians has fascinated me ever since. The idea of these figures we encounter that try to block us from our way forward. Often they are not difficult at all, just threatening. We have to find our own strength and courage to pass these guardians or end up stuck, prohibited from our true destiny.
This painting started from a dream vision of a temple and its guardians. When I sat down to paint, the vivid colors came through and gave form to the threshold guardians that may have been helping or hindering the way. The central spirit figure making their way through is trying to discern how to move forward. Unthreatened in this process they make a personal assessment of the surroundings as they gauge their own readiness. We have all been here. We will all be here again.
