Strong Sunflower
I heard a story about a brave Ukrainian Grandmother who, at the start of the war with Russia, gave a Russian soldier some sunflower seeds. She told him, “Put sunflower seeds in your pocket so they grow when you die.” That kind of strength to stand up to power and confront your own fears to speak your truth are inspirational.
This was the first sgraffito piece I made, as I considered using the process for a series. While it is not obviously thematically connected, it pushed me to explore to add complexity through process.
