The rocking chair is a classic furniture piece that many of us have childhood memories of. It's simple wooden lines are a symbol of comfort, peace, stability, contemplation, nostalgia, reflection, balance, relaxation...and more.  In dreams, a rocking chair can represent a call for comfort and care. The ergonomic benefits of a rocking chair keeps the occupant at an un-stressed position and angle, making it a comfortable to sit in for hours and reflect on our lives. The rocking motion of the chair can have soothing effect on the mind and body. Most of us have been rocked as a baby in one of these chairs or can recall our grandparents on a porch in one of these old wooden chairs. 

A few years back I made a series of chairs, as a response to being told that art that was narrative or figurative wouldn't sell. The empty chairs were a call to the memory of a person, the feeling they convey and energy we long for. There is a feeling of absence when we see an empty chair. This old wooden rocking chair was a call to the one in my home as a child. The one that my Mom and Dad had rocked me to sleep in as a baby. It was in my family until my Mom passed and then it went to live with a neighbor, and begin making memories with a new family.
