Painting on paper has a satisfying feeling. There is an immediacy in the process that invites imagination and play. Placing the tape on the border and setting up a boundary for the images to appear feels like casting a circle and calling in the corners to support. It is preparing a space for the energy to become seen. As soon as I choose a color, the story and the characters begin to make themselves known. These pieces are magical in their process of creation, a sense that comes through in the final image.
When we are in water, weight shifts and the way we sense our environment changes. We can feel the waves others make and their movements affect us. Unlike water, I’ve often thought about how the air around us allows us to ignore the fact we are in a shared environment. While in a community pool, I closed my eyes and noticed how much I picked up intuitively through movement and sound. I felt a need to find a new way to ground myself and accept that the harder I tried to secure myself in place the more I would struggle. My grounding had to happen in my spirit self, more than in my physical body.
This painting is a response to trying to shift senses. To reflect differently on our environment opens new levels of awareness for the spirit. This color pallette was a shift for me, too, and I felt it aligned well with the moments of reflection in the pool.
