Painting on paper has a satisfying feeling. There is an immediacy in the process that invites imagination and play. Placing the tape on the border and setting up a boundary for the images to appear feels like casting a circle and calling in the corners to support. It is preparing a space for the energy to become seen. As soon as I choose a color, the story and the characters begin to make themselves known. These pieces are magical in their process of creation, a sense that comes through in the final image.
Around the time of my first cancer diagnosis in 2011, I had a very vivid dream that felt like a visitation. I was walking in a desert past empty tents that were blowing in the wind. An Indian woman dressed all in orange called me into a tent. I sat down and she told me I would be here for a while, and I could not leave. Her tiger was circling us, and I could not tell if it was a threat or a protector. When I woke up, I looked up information on the Hindu deity Durga who is a warrior goddess and protector. It felt as if I was visited and told I would be protected.
This painting is an attempt to give image to the feeling of being with her in that dream. Outside of the tent, all was dry and muted. Within her tent, there was vivid color and vibration. Her energy and healing were so vibrant and confident that even with a tiger circling me, I felt safe.
